A Brief Internet History
The internet was invented as result of military needs during the Cold War between the American military and the former Soviet Union. Rather than connecting earlier computers to venerable central machines they connected computers to one another. Soon after this idea grew in popularity with the academic community. Hypertext documentation had been used to communicate ideas in the academic world for a long time. Everyday usage exploded when English physicist Tim Berners-Lee came up with the idea of using the hypertext documenting, us with worldwide computer network. As a result by the 1990's the World Wide Web (or the Web) as we know it today had exploded into everyday usage.
