  1. Pay Attention to the Websites Look -- Appearances Count
    • One good way to prepare is to spend some time online, (perhaps a few hours), looking at sites that you like. Write down what you like about them.
    • If they have things you dislike -- make note it in order to avoid going don the same road.
    • It is most important to remember that the average internet user's attention span is very, very short! If your site is hard to use, hard to navigate or boring, your visitor will leave your website in a heartbeat -- they may never return.
    • Keep in mind that copying stuff from your competitors might sound like an easy way to get things done but it'll be at least unoriginal and, worse, you could run into potential legal issues. Not good.
    • After this it's worth going back to your drawing to sketch out a few page designs.
    • Think about what type of a logo in the top-left corner that'll probably act as a link to the home page.
    • Ask yourself ... 'Do I want my navigation bar to appear vertically or horizontally?'
    • Consider how you want the bottom of each page to look. You might want some small links to your contact pages and/or other sections of your website. These are all standard design trends.

  2. The Home Front
    • We all know that first impressions last, so you'll want to spend a lot of time working on your home page. This is the first thing most users will see -- unless they're arriving at a non-home page on your website via a Google search.
    • If your home page doesn't look good, visitors may stay on your website for long. Not good.
    • Think about the images you may want to can use. Perhaps using a different image every few days or so can keep things fresh.
    • Figure out how you can tell your visitors about the benefits of the website. Make your home page interesting too.
    • You should also think about a logo, and whether you want something exciting or something plain vanilla.

  3. Your Website Should Be Simple and Easy to Navigate
    • Try not to make your website too complicated -- at least not in the beginning.
    • You have plenty of time to add things later. Initially, keep things as simple as possible.
    • When your website is presented in a simple way your message will be clearly understood.
    • Folks will get lost quickly on your website if things are too complicated.
