Register A Website Name

One of the first steps in building your own website is to register a website in a domain name registrar.

Once you register your website name and paid your fee, you are good to go.

You have the exclusive right to use that domain name for a period of time, usually a year.

When you renew it after the term expires you still own it.

Choose a Domain Name

  • Include your site keyword in your domain name.
  • Domain names are unique names given to to your web site. Some domain name extensions or suffixes are: .com = U.S., .uk = UK, .net, .org, .edu, .gov, and many more.

  • Choose a name that represents your site.
  • How do you choose a domain name? Choose a name that is easy to remember, easy to spell, and cannot be confused with other names. Improve your site's search engine ranking by using it's site keyword in the domain name.

Selecting an well planned domain name can be invaluable to web success. Use hyphens if the name has than 2 words in it.

  • Select a short name if possible.

  • Choose a Host.
  • Make sure that you are able to contact your host if you need support. The bottom line is this - it is easier to register a website name with the same company that will host your site. Prices will vary.

Nowadays, the cost of registering your domain name for a year is around $10. Godaddy, at www.godaddy.com, is one of the cheapest registrars. On the other hand you will also need a web host.

A Web Host is a business that rents out server space where you store your website files.

Considerations include data transfers -- the amount of data you may send to other computers in a month. Also consider a host's customer service and their up time performance.

  • Selecting an well planned domain name can be invaluable to web success.
  • Prices on hosting range from a few dollars per year to several thousand a month -- depending on the number of visitors.

If your budget is tight you can even get free hosting in return for allowing ads on your site. I don't recommend it but, I feel it's fair to point it out.

Selecting a Registrar

There are many registrars to choose from. Consider accreditation and cost when you register a website:

  • Accreditation:
  • Use a registrar listed on the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) website located at...
    www.icann.org/registrars/accredited-list.html.

  • Cost:
  • Some registrars charge $30 or more, never pay more than $10 per year to register your domain name.
Two of the most reliable and low cost accredited registrars are...
    Go Daddy (godaddy.com) and 1 and 1 (1and1.com)
