Doing a little research may keep you from paying for unnecessary extra features. Know your needs. The information here will hopefully help you may help you choose a good website hosting service -- one that fits your needs.

It's important to ask yourself...

... What are the major types of website hosting services?

Here are the most common choices:

Website Hosting Service Guide

  • Shared Hosting

  • One's Web site is placed on the same server as many other sites. Each site "sits" on its own partition, or section on the server. Usually, all domains may share a common pool of server resources like RAM and CPU.

This is generally the most economical option for hosting since many people share in the overall server maintenance cost.

  • Dedicated Hosting

  • With this website hosting service the user gets their own Web server and gains full control over it. The user typically does not own the server. Another type of Dedicated hosting is Self-Managed or Unmanaged.

This is usually the least expensive for Dedicated plans. The user has full administrative access to the box -- the client is responsible for the security.

  • Reseller Hosting

  • Clients become web hosts themselves qith this website hosting service. Resellers' accounts may vary tremendously in size. Many resellers provide a nearly identical service to their provider's shared hosting plan and provide the technical support themselves.

  • Colocation Hosting

  • Similar to the dedicated web hosting service, but the user owns the colo server. The hosting company provides physical space that the server takes. This is the most powerful and expensive type of the web hosting service.

  • Clustered Hosting

  • This is where multiple servers host the same content – the purpose is for better resource utilization. Clustered Servers are a perfect solution for high-availability dedicated hosting.

  • Cloud Hosting

  • This is a new type of hosting platform that allows customers powerful, scalable and reliable hosting based on clustered load-balanced servers and utility billing. Removing single-point of failures and allowing customers to pay for only what they use versus what they could use.

  • Home Hosting

  • It's possible to host your own web server at home – you heard right! This option is typically for extremely technical people – computer geeks. ;-)

You would need a dedicated web server box, an always-on high-speed Internet connection, server software, and the technical know-how, etc.

  • Free Online Hosting

  • Google’s free websites host service is called Google Sites. It’s free but…
... they limit the storage, pages, and files you can put on their sites.

Typically they have advertisement-supported web hosting -- that makes your site place their ads on your website.

    The bottom line ...

... it's limited when compared to paid hosting services.

Google takes care of all the hosting for free. Google does not allow you any domain name service. A limited amount of content is allowed.
